EMILY’s List Puts 6 House Candidates ‘On the List’

EMILY’s List announced their preliminary support for six new female House candidates from across the country on Monday.

The organization, which supports female Democratic candidates who back abortion rights, stopped short of giving the contenders their full endorsements.

But the following candidates have been placed “On the List,” giving them access to EMILY’s List’s fundraising and grass-roots supporters:

  • State Rep. Alma Adams, who is running in a highly contested primary in what may be an open-seat race to replace Democratic Rep. Melvin Watt in North Carolina’s 12th District. Watt is currently going through a contentious Senate confirmation process for a spot in President Barack Obama’s administration.
  • Former state Sen. Staci Appel, who is challenging Republican Rep. Tom Latham, a prominent ally of Speaker John A. Boehner, in Iowa’s 3rd District.
  • Democratic National Committeewoman Erin Bilbray-Kohn, who is challenging Republican Rep. Joe Heck in Nevada’s 3rd District.
  • Former state Rep. Pam Byrnes, who is challenging Republican Rep. Tim Walberg in Michigan’s 7th District.
  • State Sen. Emily Cain, who announced she is running in what is likely to be a highly contested Democratic primary for Maine’s 2nd District. A competitive race surfaced there after Democratic Rep. Michael H. Michaud announced last month he was exploring a gubernatorial bid.
  • Education advocate Elisabeth Jensen, who is challenging Republican Rep. Andy Barr in Kentucky’s 6th District.

“Alma, Staci, Erin, Pam, Emily, and Elisabeth are all smart, tough leaders who have tackled diverse challenges in their communities,” EMILY’s List President Stephanie Schriock said in a news release. “They have what it takes to stand up to anti-woman Republicans, and move us forward with real solutions to our nation’s biggest problems, and we’re thrilled to support them during the early days of their campaigns.”
