The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is up with a new ad Tuesday attacking Republican Thom Tillis on education.
Polls show a tied race between Tillis and Sen. Kay Hagan, D-N.C. Republicans need to gain six seats to take control of the Senate, and the party has targeted the Tar Heel State as one of them.
The DSCC's ad, provided first to CQ Roll Call, echoes arguments Hagan and Democrats have made throughout the campaign. It attacks Tillis for his tenure as speaker of the state House, during which time he was responsible for the budget for public education in the state.
"As Speaker of the House, he cut nearly $500 million dollars from public education, and gave huge new tax breaks to millionaires," says a woman identified as Gretchen Ross.
"A vote for Thom Tillis is a vote against families like mine," she adds.
The ad is part of a more than $10 million buy from the DSCC.
Both parties are spending heavily to help push their candidate over the edge, making this the most expensive Senate race of the cycle.
The North Carolina Senate race is poised to top $100 million in spending this cycle. League of Conservation Voters, for example, added $600,000 to their $400,000 buy to help Hagan for the final week.
The race is rated Tilts Democrat by the Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call.
