Republican Rep. Tim Huelskamp is getting help from the Club for Growth as he faces a tough primary on Kansas' August 2 election.

The group's political action committee, Club for Growth Action, released an ad Monday, attacking Huelskamp's GOP primary opponent, Roger Marshall, for supporting a bill "that grows the debt by hundreds of billions."

The ad doesn't say which specific bill Marshall, an OB-GYN who has never held elective office, supported. But Doug Sachtleben, communications director at the Club for Growth, said it was specifically focused on the "doc fix " passed in Congress last year, which deals with how Medicare doctors are paid.

"Huelskamp is great on our issues," Sachtleben said, adding that the three-term congressman has a 100 percent lifetime Club for Growth score. "We feel like this will help push him over the top."

The ad comes as a recent internal poll showed Marshall virtually tied  with Huelskamp.

Last week, the Kansas Farm Bureau announced it would endorse Marshall over Huelskamp. That's the first time the bureau has endorsed a primary challenger over an incumbent in the 1st Congressional District.

Warren Parker, director of policy communications at the Kansas Farm Bureau, said part of the reason his organization backed Marshall was because Huelskamp opposed the farm bill in almost every form and because he was removed from both the agriculture and budget committees.
