The San Fernando Valley cable systems are reaping the benefits of what’s expected to be one of the most expensive House races ever.
A super PAC reportedly supporting California Rep. Howard Berman has purchased a half-million dollars in cable TV time for the next month, according to the campaign of Berman’s opponent, fellow Democratic Rep. Brad Sherman. The ad buy runs from May 2 to June 4.
The buy comes shortly after Sherman purchased about $420,000 and the Berman campaign bought more than $1 million to run ads on cable until the June 5 primary.
Berman and Sherman are likely to advance to the 30th district general election under the state’s new top-two primary format, but a few other candidates running complicate the race. Both campaigns are seeking to distinguish the lawmakers from each other, something the Los Angeles Times admitted was difficult in its endorsement of Berman today.
The Sherman campaign stated that $279,000 would run on West Valley Time Warner Cable, $204,000 on South Valley Time Warner Cable and $17,000 on multiple Valley Time Warner systems. The ads will run on a long list of major cable networks, including during Comedy Central's "The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report,” as well as during the NBA playoff games of the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers.
No consultants are included in the super PAC's Federal Election Commission disbursement records. An email to an attorney listed as the super PAC’s treasurer was not returned. Neither was a message left for Jerry Seedborg, whose firm Voter Guide Slate Cards is owed nearly $24,000 from the super PAC, according to FEC records.
