An hourlong meeting between President Barack Obama and top congressional leaders at the White House on Tuesday afternoon was exclusively about foreign policy, according to an aide to Speaker John A. Boehner, R-Ohio.
The meeting had been expected to touch on the doubling of student loan interest rates next week, immigration, the budget, the president’s newly announced climate plan and other issues, but those were apparently not discussed.
“The president briefed the leaders on a number of issues and events taking place around the globe, and the speaker appreciated the courtesy,” the Boehner aide said.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., told reporters that the meeting was “good” upon returning to the Capitol.
“The word ‘immigration’ never came out of his lips,” Reid said of Obama.
There certainly is plenty of foreign policy for the four leaders to talk about — including the case of Edward Snowden, which has affected relations with China, Russia and other countries — as well as the civil war in Syria, given the president’s recent decision to increase military assistance to the rebels.
