The political action committee of the National Rifle Association has spent $466,000 on television and Internet advertising highlighting the gun control measures supported by Terry McAuliffe in Virginia's gubernatorial race.
The National Rifle Association of American Political Victory Fund reported it had September receipts of $1,059,520 and disbursements of $526,920, leaving $10,696,825 cash on hand as of 9/30. Most of the donors to the PAC were contributors giving $200 or less, totaling $926,572. In the first eight months of the year the PAC spent an average of $47,000 a month.
The PAC spent $466,273 on independent expenditures, including $406,627 on television advertising; $35,838 on Internet ads; and $23,808 on printing, postage, email alerts, and postcards. The PAC is using Starboard Strategic INc. for media buys.
The PAC also gave $41,950 to federal candidates and committees, including $4,950 to the campaigns of Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo.; $3,500 to Rep. Nick Rahall, D-W.Va.; $3,000 to Rep. Tim Griffin, R-Ark. (who has just announced he is retiring; and $2,500 to Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif; among others.
