Republican Mark Amodei is launching a TV ad Friday that puts the finishing touches on the message he and the GOP have pushed since the start of the special election campaign for Nevada’s 2nd district — that Democrat Kate Marshall will be just another Democrat in Congress.
Titled “Echo,” the ad simply runs clips of Marshall using the exact same phrases as President Barack Obama, Vice President Joseph Biden and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), one after the other. It ends with the tag line, “Send Washington a message, not a rubber stamp.”
The ad comes a couple of days after the Marshall campaign released one titled “Truth,” which kept up with her campaign theme of portraying herself as fiscally conservative and labeling Amodei as a supporter of ending Medicare.
The ads come with less than two weeks to go before the Sept. 13 special to replace appointed Sen. Dean Heller (R). Early voting has been open since Aug. 27, and the updated turnout figures indicate Amodei is in good shape.
Including Thursday’s updated totals provided by the Nevada secretary of state’s office, more than 19,000 Republicans have voted compared with fewer than 12,000 Democrats. That includes a 2,500 GOP voter edge in Reno’s Washoe County, which Marshall needs to win. She’s also trailing in the portion of Las Vegas’ Clark County that’s included in the district.
Marshall has raised good money, but Amodei has been bolstered financially by the national GOP. In her pre-special filing with the Federal Election Commission, due Thursday, Marshall reported raising $450,000 from July 1 to Aug. 24, leaving her with $188,000 in the bank.
Amodei raised nearly $400,000 during the same time frame and had $128,000 in cash on hand as of Aug. 24. Beefing up his cause has been the National Republican Congressional Committee, which invested $600,000 on the race, and conservative political action committee American Crossroads, which added another $250,000 to help ensure Democrats don’t win yet another special election.
