'Ladies Night' for Senators at the White House

President Barack Obama has invited all 20 of the historic class of women senators to dine at the White House Tuesday night, senators and the White House schedule confirmed.

Obama has been holding dinners with senators over the past few weeks to discuss current policy issues, including two meals with Republicans and one last week with Democrats. The meal Tuesday will be bipartisan, though CQ Roll Call was not able to immediately confirm the attendance of all 20 senators.

Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., said there was no stated purpose for the meeting, but that she is “looking forward” to a meal with the president and her female colleagues.

Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand of New York commented on the dinner via her Twitter feed Monday night, praising the president for the gathering.

“Thank you Pres. Obama for inviting all the women Senators to the White House for dinner tomw night. Looking forward to it! #offthesidelines,” Gillibrand said in one tweet.

“As I suggested to Pres. Obama last year: inviting Senate women to WH is a good step toward bipartisan cooperation,” she added in another.

Steven T. Dennis contributed to this report.
