“The Congressional Fiscal Leadership Council is comprised of men and women who know what compromise looks like and who recognize the urgency of addressing our country’s growing federal debt,” Maya MacGuineas, a member of the Campaign to Fix the Debt steering committee, said in a statement. “This new group of affiliates will lend its experience and deep expertise to advance the mission of the Campaign to Fix the Debt.”
The group bills itself as a non-partisan movement and urges lawmakers to work together on a grand bargain to reduce government spending.
Meyers & Associates Staffs Up
David Davis, the former chief of staff to ex-Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, has landed a post-congressional gig. Davis is joining Meyers & Associates along with David Collins, a 25-year veteran of the Cotton Council International, and environmental policy specialist Tim Richardson.
“If there is a policy decision of national importance to be made, Meyers & Associates is poised to influence that decision,” President Larry D. Meyers said in a press release announcing the hires. “Just as D.C. evolves, our firm has successfully done the same since 1981 giving us the leverage of institutional knowledge coupled with a respected, experienced team.”
In addition to his work as the Texas Republican’s top aide, Davis, a onetime Army officer, was a senior adviser on the Senate Commerce Committee. Collins spent time as regional director for South Asia and the Arabian Gulf with the cotton group. Richardson, who worked on the Exxon Valdez oil spill cleanup, was previously government affairs director for the American Land Conservancy and he will assist the firm with its BP Deepwater Horizon project.
Echoes of Growth
The Glen Echo Group has brought on two new hires in Shermineh Rohanizadeh and Ellen Backus. Rohanizadeh, formerly with Voice of America, is signing on as director of media relations, while Backus will be senior media counsel.
Rohanizadeh is one of the founders of Weapons of Mouse Destruction, an art project directed against government Internet censorship, the firm said in a statement announcing the hires. Backus has been in the communications and corporate branding business for two decades, including with FitzGerald Communications.
“2013 has already delivered another growth spurt for the Glen Echo Group team,” said Maura Corbett, the firm’s president and founder.
The Big One
The Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America has promoted lobbyist Charles E. Symington Jr. to senior vice president of external affairs. He has been with the Big I, as the group is known, for nine years.
In his new role, Symington will manage government affairs programs including federal and state legislative work, as well as political and grass-roots operations. He will also oversee media affairs and communications.
