Sporty Pols to Partake in Charity Tennis Match
Around a dozen intrepid lawmakers have agreed to prove their worth on the tennis court Wednesday by participating in the rapid-fire Washington Kastles Charity Classic.
Tickets to the fourth annual fundraiser, scheduled to take place at Kastles Stadium at the Charles E. Smith Center (600 22nd St. NW) beginning at 7 p.m., start at $10 per person and climb to $50 for VIP amenities. Per organizers, all proceeds are expected to flow through to Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, DC Public Education Fund or Food & Friends, with attendees deciding which group should benefit from each ticket purchase.
As part of the program, tennis pros and participating pols will be split into Team Stars and Teams Stripes and pitted against one another in a series of successive tiebreakers. Whichever group scores the most points will clinch the charity classic crown.
“Our franchise’s founding mission has been to give back to the D.C. community, which makes the Charity Classic such a meaningful night,” Kastles owner Mark Ein said in a statement. “People who don’t agree on much can agree that tennis is the sport of a lifetime and a wonderful way to come together.”
Politicians returning to the field of battle include Reps. Charlie Dent, R-Pa., and Cheri Bustos, D-Ill., and Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., all of whom savored the taste of victory in 2014.
Reps. Joyce Beatty, D-Ohio; Robert J. Dold, R-Ill.; Jared Huffman, D-Calif.; Robert C. Scott, D-Va.; and Kevin Yoder, R-Kan., and Sens. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., and Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., are expected to round out the congressional contingent this time around.
Wimbledon and Australian Open mixed doubles champ Leander Paes, leading doubles player Anastasia Rodionova and professional singles player Sam Querrey will represent the Kastles.
