Word on the Hill: D.C. Gets a New Museum

The new Smithsonian National Museum of African American Historyand Culture is open to the media all day Wednesday.

Ahead of its grand opening on Sept. 24, members of the press are able to preview all 12 exhibits, the Oprah Winfrey Theater and the cafe on Wednesday. Check tomorrow's Heard on the Hill for photographs and a review.

Sen. Tim Scott will be sharing photographs from his sneak peek starting at 8:30 a.m. on his Instagram account (@SenatorTimScott). The South Carolina Republican will use both the "Stories" feature and the main feed to showcase the museum's many Palmetto State artifacts.

Beyer promotes spelling bee

2015 victor of the "Politicians vs. Press' Spelling Bee, Rep. Don Beyer, D-Va., recorded a video to promote the Sept. 21 event. This year's team of politicians includes Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Reps. Scott Peters, D-Calif., Tom Emmer, R-Minn., Mark Takano, D-Calif., Ted Deutch, D-Fla., and Beyer. In 2013, vice presidential candidate Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., took home the trophy.

Caucus craziness 

The Congressional College Football Caucus is launching with a breakfast at 8 a.m. in Rayburn 2168. Reps. Roger Williams, R-Texas, and Terri Sewell, D-Ala., are spearheading the event.

CEOs of top U.S. manufacturers of chocolate, candy, gum, and mints are in town this week for their annual fly-in, educating Members of Congress about the #PowerOfSweet and the need for sugar reform. More than 120 National Confectioners Association members will be joined by about 20 members of the new Congressional Candy Caucus for a reception on Capitol Hill this evening.

Staffer shuffle

Following Hugh Halpern's departure as House Rules Committee staff director, deputy Stephen Cote has been promoted to permanent staff director. 

Halpern took over as director of floor operations for Speaker Paul D. Ryan, succeeding Anne Bradbury, who is leaving Capitol Hill for the Durberstein Group.

Spotted

Former Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., while vice presidential candidate Mike Pence was on Capitol Hill.

ICYMI: FinServ Snapchat Filter

For a markup on Tuesday in the House Committee on Financial Services, the staff set up a Snapchat filter, which touts the #CHOICEAct as "The Financial Choice Act. Growth for All, Bailouts for None," and shows up for anyone near the committee room's Snapchat.
