It’s time again for Take Five, when HOH talks with a member of Congress about topics relatively unrelated to legislative work.
This week, Democratic Rep. Jared Polis of Colorado talks to Take 5 about his love of skiing back home, his tech ‘geek’ side and his dog’s visits to the Hill.
Q : Are you a skier or a snowboarder?
A : I’ve been a skier since I was four years old. I love skiing up in Vail, Colorado . But, since being elected to Congress I haven’t gotten the chance to ski very much. It’s ironic that I get to represent some of the premier ski resorts in the country—like Breckenridge, Winter Park, Vail, Copper Mountain—but, I used to ski a lot more before I was in Congress. I think I skied once in the last five years.
Q : You’ve invested in various companies, what got you interested in the tech world?
A : I started my first company when I was in college, kind of in my dorm room. It was an internet access provider with some college friends. I’ve always been a bit of a geek and grew up on electronic bulletin boards and was so excited by the Internet that me and a couple of friends started the provider.
Q : I hear you bring your dog often to the office, does she participate with you at work?
A : I do, Gia comes in most days and she’s a great dog. She instantly sits on the lap of many of my constituents who visit and every now and then, there’s somebody she doesn’t like. She’s a pretty good judge of character.
Q : Tell me about your love of baseball.
A : The Congressional Baseball Game is coming up and I’m so excited to play. It’s one of the most exciting things that comes along with all of the hard work and long hours. And I enjoy playing with friends back in Colorado as well.
[Editor’s note: the Congressional Baseball Game is on June 23. ]
Q : You have two kids. When you find spare time in D.C. on the weekends, what do you like to do with them?
A : We’re not here too often on weekends but when we are, this is a great town for kids to learn and see things. [My son] CJ loves the building museum, we’ve taken him there a couple of times. He also loves just playing on the computer at home.
