Rep. Suzan DelBene’s professional family expanded by one this past weekend, after her chief of staff, Aaron Schmidt, went ahead and tied the knot with Justin Zielke.

The longstanding couple did the legal thing on their own, but on May 16 they invited friends and loved ones — including the Washington Democrat, who was asked to say a few words — to celebrate the joyous occasion of their union out on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

According to one of the roughly 140 guests in attendance, DelBene recounted how the two had become one.

"As many of you know, Aaron and Justin met accidentally over eight years ago. But whatever has happened since has been no accident,” a DelBene aide said the congresswoman informed the assembled guests. “Both Aaron and Justin told me that growing up they never thought they would have the opportunity to get married, yet here we are today, because love is love. For them, out of the routine of ordinary life, the extraordinary has happened. They met each other and fell in love."

Something might be in the air in DelBene's office. On May 15, Legislative Correspondent Whitney Hamilton was all set to wed Patrick McCarthy. And DelBene’s district scheduler, Bree Rabourn, is scheduled to tie the knot with Ryan Cowper in August.
