Staffers: Where Do You See Yourself in Five Years?

A few hope to be far away from Capitol Hill

Some Hill staffers tell Roll Call they hope to be far from the Hill in five years time. (Bill Clark/CQ Roll Call)

It’s a common question in interviews: Where do you see yourself in five years?

For congressional staffers, it’s not the easiest question to answer. Elections, leadership races, resignations — so much could affect their job security.

We asked current aides to tell us where they see themselves in five years, and many didn’t have an answer. Some staffers, after weeks of high partisanship and harsh rhetoric flying around, hoped to be anywhere but on Capitol Hill. Here are some of the responses.

“In 5 years, I see myself …”

“ Working up the ladder on Capitol Hill while simultaneously increasing the number of staffers of color that can lead Senate offices.”

“Far, far away from anything related to politics.”

“I have no idea.”

“FAR FAR away from the Hill.”

“Moving to the good ol’ South, making a life, living and difference back home in the GREAT state of Georgia.”
