People were lining up to try Rep. Marsha Blackburn’s Nashville-style hot chicken Tuesday evening.
The Tennessee Republican won the People’s Choice award at the March of Dimes Gourmet Gala, an annual fundraiser where lawmakers become celebrity chefs to the delight of attendees’ tastebuds. This year’s gala included 50 members of Congress — from both chambers and both sides of the aisle — sharing samples of their favorite recipe. Many took the opportunity to showcase delicacies specific to their hometowns.
Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, won Judges’ Choice for his lobster stew, Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Mich., won Best Presentation for her chili and Rep. Doug Lamborn, R-Colo., won Hometown Hero for his Colorado bison burger sliders.
Each member had a station set up to share a dish with the judges and attendees. Many served alongside their spouse or a staffer, while Rep. Bill Johnson, R-Ohio, put his son to work.
Other winners included Rep. Linda T. Sánchez, D-Calif., who bested a number of guacamoles to take home the Healthiest Recipe award and Rep. Robert B. Aderholt, R-Ala., who won Easiest Presentation for his berry bruschetta.
March of Dimes is a nonprofit that works to prevent premature births and birth defects.
