John McCain to Match Wits With the Real Stephen Colbert

Arizona Republican John McCain is scheduled Monday to swing by the new Late Show to have some laughs with former faux-conservative firebrand Stephen Colbert. (Bill Clark/CQ Roll Call FIle Photo) The five-term senator is no stranger to the late-night circuit; he’s traded barbs with punch line-spewing pundits for most of the past decade. But tonight’s appearance on the CBS yakfest will be with the no-longer-character-bound Colbert, whose previous show was predicated on the premise of him channeling Fox News personality Bill O’Reilly. McCain and Colbert last crossed paths in December amid Colbert’s farewell lap at Comedy Central. You’ll never go back to anything else,” McCain, an avid griller, advocated whilst recapping his Thanksgiving — to an examination of modern warfare as encapsulated in McCain’s historical tome, “Thirteen Soldiers.” The bonhomie on display last winter was decidedly different than the tone Colbert struck during McCain’s 2008 bid to inhabit the Oval Office. Either way, it is a perfect set up to a zinger,” a nearly hysterical Colbert assured viewers in a segment lampooning the ultimately doomed presidential campaign.
