Former Rep. James P. Moran has, no doubt, for years dined out on the tale of once stepping into the ring with former world heavyweight champion Joe Frazier.
But the particulars surrounding the fabled encounter have always remained fuzzy.
HOH went a few rounds with the 12-term lawmaker, slipping in repeated requests for details about the carefully choreographed spectacle. “It was the same night as the White House Correspondents’ [Association] Dinner. I was the guest of NBC. I excused myself for two hours, got back in time for dessert,” he said of a charity match presumably held not too far from the Washington Hilton.
“When they asked, ‘Where were you?’ I told them, ‘I just fought Joe Frazier,’" he related, bobbing and weaving when pressed for the year it happened.
“They never invited me back again. Probably because they thought I was delusional,” Moran quipped.
A one-time amateur boxer, whose father was also a boxer, it sounds like Moran had no illusions about how he might actually fare against “Smokin’ Joe.” The boxing champ died in 2011.
“Joe could have flattened me any time he chose to. Fortunately he was very generous to me and protective of my ego,” Moran shared. “He's a great guy.”
Across his political career, Moran has never been one to back away from a fight.
Which is why when a partygoer at the recent CQ Roll Call anniversary party led with an off-the-cuff comment about the state of the New England Patriots, Moran came out swinging.
"Fuck Tom Brady. He endorsed Donald Trump," the Virginia Democrat, who grew up in suburban Boston, announced — practically begging someone to square up in defense of the Super Bowl-winning QB.
