Rep. Jim McGovern rubs elbows with the powerful every day. But he’s really looking forward to informing his kids about an extra special new acquaintance: Tony the Tiger.
Kellogg’s put the Massachusetts Democrat’s face on a specially produced, Plexiglas-encased box to commemorate his participation in the company’s ongoing Share Your Breakfast campaign. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson (R-Mo.), who co-chairs the House Hunger Caucus alongside McGovern, and Sen. John Boozman (R-Ark.), the Senate Hunger Caucus co-chairman, also received keepsake breakfast trophies.
“This is incredible. I’ve gotten a lot of awards, but this is about the only thing my kids will be impressed with,” McGovern said while admiring his promotional portraiture.
Boozman also considers it a career highlight. “I don’t know that it gets any better than having your picture on a Frosted Flakes box,” he said.
Kevin Concannon, the Agriculture undersecretary for federal nutrition programs, also had his mug splashed across a container of cereal flakes.
Kellogg’s executives poured into the Rayburn House Office Building bright and early with a make-your-own spread of proprietary cereals, toaster waffles and Nutri-Grain bars as part of their educational push. The campaign is designed to raise awareness of child hunger and to provide grants to schools to expand their breakfast programs.
Several House Members stopped by to grab a bite, including Democrats Sanford Bishop (Ga.), Jesse Jackson Jr. (Ill.), Eddie Bernice Johnson (Texas), Bobby Scott (Va.) and Republicans Peter Roskam (Ill.) and Tim Walberg (Mich.).
