Embassies Get Their Entertainment On

As September draws to a close, several embassies are opening their doors to the public with films and celebrations.

Kicking things off Friday is Film by the Pool at the Embassy of Switzerland (2900 Cathedral Ave. NW.) RSVP tickets will be available online Thursday morning.

“We are very much looking forward to hosting the first-ever movie night at the pool,” said Andrea Kienast, the embassy’s event manager.

“The beautiful embassy park is usually closed to the public,” Kienast said, adding, “We wanted to invite people this fall to enjoy an unusually romantic setting and two great movies.”

The first film is “Un Mundo para Raúl,” a short film Mauro Mueller that tells the story of a 13-year-old boy who must entertain his father’s boss’ son. The film will have English subtitles, and Mueller will be present to take questions from the audience.

The second movie that will be shown is “Eine wen iig, dr Dallebach Kari,” from Xavier Koller. The movie will be shown in Swiss dialect with English subtitles.

“The weather is looking great and we will be offering Swiss wine and other beverages at no charge for attendees,” said Kienast, adding that “D.C.-based vendors Milk Cult and Rare Sweets will be selling a delicious ice cream and a variety of flavors of popcorn for $3-$4.”

People are encouraged to bring warm clothes and a blanket to sit on.

“If this movie night is a success we might make a series out of Film by the Pool,” Kienast said.

On Sept. 23, Brian Brown of Big Law Business Development and the Embassy of the Bahamas, along with Glennfiddich Scotch, are putting on an island party at the embassy (2220 Massachusetts Ave. NW) that will also serve as a welcome party for new Ambassador Eugene Newry, as well as a going-away one for outgoing Ambassador Elliston Rahming.

Tickets are free, but RSVPs are requested.

And on Sept. 30, the Royal Thai Embassy is celebrating the 180th anniversary of Thai-United States relations. The embassy will present Khon classical dance and a Thai puppet show at the Warner Theatre in downtown D.C. beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are free but RSVPs are requested.
