Rumor has it not everyone in D.C. will be locked within the House chamber or glued to C-SPAN for President Barack Obama’s latest State of the Union address Tuesday night.
While this town does get its jollies from political pageantry, the rest of the free world will (rightfully) be engaging in the pre-Lenten bacchanal known as Mardi Gras.
Acadiana, 901 New York Ave. NW
This Louisiana-style kitchen is rolling out a four-course, prix-fixe dinner (5:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m., $50 per person) — featuring oysters Bienville, crawfish jambalaya, rabbit étouffée and king cake doughnuts — in the main dining room. The restaurant will also offer New Orleans-style snacks (3:30 p.m.-close) such as house-made cracklin’ ($2) and Buffalo frog legs ($10) at the bar.
Boozehounds can drain assorted specialty drinks ($5 each), including the signature Category Five (their Hurricane) and Cajun Dark and Stormy.
Bayou Bakery, 1515 N. Courthouse Road, Arlington, Va.
Chef David Guas is teaming with Rappahannock River Oysters and Gina Chersevani, both of Union Market fame, for the Bayou Gras Block Party (5 p.m.-11 p.m.).
A $15 beer ticket buys access to three Abita brews, a $25 cocktail ticket entitles one to three Chersevani-mixed creations (Hurricane Gina, Parade Punch), a $30 food ticket grants entree to three featured dishes (spicy crawfish tamales, muff-a-lotta sandwiches and house king cake; freshly shucked oysters also included), while a $10 kids ticket secures (12 and under) one meal and a cold drink.
Ceiba, 701 14th St. NW
Taking its cue from Brazil, Ceiba will ply bar patrons with $5 drinks (caipirinha) and street food ($5 each) ranging from salt-cod-and-potato fritter with pineapple crema to pork and clams. Specials available from 3 p.m. to close.
Fiola, 601 Pennsylvania Ave. NW
The heart of this Venetian-style “carnevale” is a four-course, gourmet dinner ($60 per person; includes wine pairings) with your choice of marinated artichoke hearts, mussels and clam-laced risotto, pasta with duck ragu, guinea hen and house-made apple fritters, among others.
New Orleans Po Boy Shop, 1205 19th St. NW
This dedicated sandwich shop typically fields more than a dozen specialty po’ boys ($8-$12) every day, as well as daily entree specials (sausage and shrimp jambalaya; $8.50). But given the occasion, co-founder Justin Snyder said the restaurant will also dish shrimp creole ($9.50) and bourbon-glazed chicken po’ boys ($8.50) for Mardi Gras. Oh yeah, and free slices of king cake (while they last).
