Michelle Lim Warner and Michael Warner, owners of the wine and beer shop DCanter on Barracks Row, are launching a fundraising campaign this month for a cause that’s quite personal to their family.

Carles is a small town on the northeastern edge of Panay Island in the Philippines and was greatly impacted by the recent typhoon that hit the islands. Carles is also where Michelle’s mother and grandmother, who died a few years ago, grew up.

Michelle says she has great memories of visiting the town and she and her mother want to raise $10,000 by Jan. 1 as a part of their Rebuild Carles campaign. According to Michelle, this would build modest, but strong, two-bedroom homes for 15 families.

As of Tuesday evening, they have raised $375.

Beverage lovers, take note: The Warners’ wine and beer boutique is holding a raffle for two wine/craft-beer class tickets to anyone who donates $100 or more to the Carles cause. (Winners to be notified Jan. 2; tickets will be redeemable for classes throughout 2014.) DCanter’s classes range from about $30 to $65 apiece: For example, an upcoming January class will look at the tasting and classifications of sparkling wines and currently costs $40 a person.

Additionally, 100 percent of the profits from San Miguel beer sales at the shop will go toward helping fishermen rebuild boats on the islands. San Miguel is the largest beer producer in the Philippines and Michelle says it’s simply “refreshing.”
