Get excited: The 14th annual First Tee Congressional Challenge is scheduled for Monday, July 27.
This year, Roll Call has promised a shiny new trophy for the winners.
Republicans have held the prized Roll Call Cup for the past three years . In 2013, the nail-biter tournament ended in a tie, which meant the reigning champions held onto the trophy. Last year, the Republicans had a clear victory, winning 14-6.
This year’s events will start on Sunday, July 26 at the Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Md., with practice rounds in the afternoon. A reception with members and sponsors will be held in the Columbia clubhouse at 5:15 p.m., with a dinner afterward.
The ultimate challenge will start at 8 a.m. the next day at the country club and events will wrap up with a trophy presentation reception at 5:15 p.m. at the Cornerstone Government Affairs.
Reps. Ander Crenshaw, R-Fla., and John Yarmuth, D-Ky., are the team captains. It's Crenshaw's fourth year in charge, Yarmuth's fifth.
The funds raised benefit The First Tee , a youth golf program. The First Tee uses golf lessons to teach life skills and values. It works with elementary schools and youth-development organizations such as the YMCA and Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
Dan Tate Sr., a lobbyist and FTCC organizer who has worked with the game since its inception, said two things impress him each year.
"First, many Members of Congress who play in the Challenge frequently have not played golf in weeks ... but I am truly amazed at the quality of many of the shots these occasional golfers pull off," Tate said in an email. "Second, and far more important ... as hard-fought as the golf rivalry is, there is a respect and civility that permeates the practice rounds and dinner on Sunday and every single match. For a couple of days, these guys put aside their partisan differences and become fellow golf sufferers.
"You'd almost think they like one another," Tate quipped.
