With fewer than two months until the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run, staffers are reminded to start training.
Within that race is the Capitol Hill Competition, which involves Capitol Hill staffers forming teams to participate for the coveted Capitol Hill Cup. The competition’s kickoff event is on Wednesday in the Rayburn House Office Building's foyer at noon.
At the kickoff, training experts from Potomac River Running will speak with attendees and healthy snacks will be provided. Staffers will have the opportunity to sign-up for a team or as individuals for the competition , which will take place on April 3.
After the kickoff Wednesday, a group will go on a February Frost 3-mile run on the National Mall, starting at 3 p.m. The run is led by Serena Burla, who competed five days prior in the U.S. Women's Olympic Marathon Trials in Los Angeles.
Staffers are guaranteed entry into Capitol Hill Competition, which is separate from the lottery component of the Cherry Blossom Run. Registration ends at the end of February, and the fee for participating in the 10-mile run is $43 and $33 for the 5K.
The competition began in 2002 and benefits Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Last year, more than 850 runners participated, including 22 House teams and 25 Senate teams. The winning team was “Red, White and Blumenauer,” fielded by the office of Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore.
