Hawaii: Don Young Backs Mazie Hirono

Members of Congress from Hawaii and Alaska have a history of bipartisan cooperation, and that was on full display today in the Hawaii Senate race.

Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) appeared in a 90-second web ad alongside Rep. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) to endorse her for Hawaii's open Senate seat. Hirono is facing former Rep. Ed Case in the Aug. 11 Democratic primary, the winner of which will take on former Gov. Linda Lingle (R) in the general election.

The spot is lighthearted, with Young attempting a couple of times to offer his opinion of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) before being stopped by Hirono.

"Here's what's important, Hawaii: If you're looking for a United States Senator who doesn't just talk about bipartisanship, but actually knows how to work with both Republicans and Democrats to get things done — Mazie Hirono will be that Senator," Young says in the ad.

The Democratic nominee will be heavily favored to win the seat of retiring Sen. Daniel Akaka (D) in this Democratic-leaning state, especially with President Barack Obama at the top of the ticket in his home state.

Roll Call rates the race as Leans Democratic.
