George McGovern Hospitalized for Fatigue, Expected to Fully Recover

George McGovern, a former presidential candidate and Senator, was hospitalized, the Associated Press reported today.

The 89-year-old South Dakota Democrat was admitted to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., for fatigue, hospital spokeswoman Julie Ward told the AP today. He is expected to fully recover and be released in a couple of days, she said.

McGovern’s new book, “What It Means to Be a Democrat,” is scheduled for release Nov. 10. He was hospitalized after completing a lecture tour, Ward said.

McGovern served in the House from 1957 to 1961 and in the Senate from 1963 to 1981. He unsuccessfully challenged President Richard Nixon in 1972 as the Democratic nominee, losing in a landslide. He also lost bids to become the Democratic presidential nominee in 1968 and 1984.
