Deeply vulnerable Rep. David Rivera (R-Fla.), whose campaign and personal finances are under investigation by local authorities, picked up a challenger Wednesday.
State Rep. Luis Garcia, a former fire chief, is the first Democrat to announce a campaign in the Miami-area 25th district, according to the Miami Herald.
Rivera is a top target for Democrats, who see an opportunity to beat the former state Representative who won the House seat with 52 percent of the vote in 2010. Rivera raised a paltry $35,000 in the second quarter. He had $62,000 in cash on hand at the end of June, according to his Federal Election Commission filing.
“I look forward next year to the voters contrasting my fiscally responsible approach toward creating jobs and improving the economy with the failed economic policies of Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi [or] Luis Garcia,” Rivera said in a statement to Roll Call.
