The Federal Election Commission has filed suit in a Florida court over a pattern of questionable campaign contributions associated with the campaigns of Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.).
The Florida independent first published the story Monday afternoon, noting that Buchanan himself isn’t named as a defendant, but that a company he owned and a business partner are accused of offering reimbursements for campaign donations and exceeding limits in the 2006 and 2008 cycles.
And this isn’t the first time Buchanan, who was elected to his third term in November in Florida’s 13th district with 69 percent of the vote, has had similar issues. The Independent reports:
In the past few years, at least 14 lawsuits have been filed by Buchanan’s former employees, each alleging pressure to contribute to the campaign and the offer of reimbursements in return.
The St. Petersburg Times speculated in 2009 that the lawsuits had something to do with Buchanan's decision not to seek statewide office, though Florida Republicans told Roll Call he might consider a bid for Senate in 2012.
