Republican Rob Cornilles launched his first TV ad since the primary in the special House election for Oregon’s 1st district.
The ad comes one day after the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and his Democratic opponent, state Sen. Suzanne Bonamici, each went up with TV ads in the Portland-based district.
The Cornilles ad, which features the candidate and his wife, plays up the fact that Cornilles is a small-business owner. It concludes with him saying, “We have to focus on bipartisan solutions that create real jobs.”
A Republican source said Cornilles spent $80,000 for the ad to run on network TV. It makes no mention of his political party in this solidly Democratic district. Special elections can be unpredictable, and the DCCC isn't taking any chances. So the committee went on the air early before next month's election, and the Democrats are attempting to tie Cornilles to the tea party.
The GOP source said the DCCC buy was $124,280 on network TV with a secondary buy of $24,170 on cable.
Like the Cornilles ad, Bonamici’s new ad was also a positive spot and featured her standing in a valley and highlighting her support to protect entitlements and “ending the Bush tax cuts for millionaires.” The GOP source with knowledge of the buy said her campaign spent $117,000 on network TV and $22,600 on cable for the 30-second ad.
Bonamici and Cornilles are running to replace former Rep. David Wu (D), who resigned in early August. Both easily advanced past their November primaries, and ballots are due in the mail-only special election by Jan. 31.
