Pelosi, Ryan Win Website Kudos

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Budget Chairman Paul Ryan got a little boost today for their websites.

The California Democrat and Wisconsin Republican are recipients of Gold Mouse Awards, honors given by the Congressional Management Foundation to lawmakers with the best websites.

Pelosi won for the best leadership website, while Ryan received the award for best House homepage.

Sen. Mark Begich (D-Alaska) was named the Senator with the best website, and the House Education and Workforce Committee — led by Rep. John Kline (R-Minn.) — has the distinction of being the best panel website in both chambers.

“These Members of Congress are to be commended for education citizens and achieving the highest degree of transparency and accountability in online communications,” said Brad Fitch, president and CEO of the Congressional Management Foundation, a nonprofit group dedicated to increasing efficiency on the Hill. “These winners ... understand the value of using the Internet to enlighten and serve constituents.”

Though these Members received “platinum awards” for hosting standout websites, 94 other lawmakers on Capitol Hill received gold, silver and bronze Mouse Awards. Among the honorees are 12 House freshmen.

Awards are given based on a number criteria, including usability, timeliness of content, breadth and depth of information on lawmakers’ political stances and constituent services and casework information.

The Congressional Management Foundation will only release the names of award winners. However, it has revealed that nearly half of all new Senators received a grade of D or F for their websites, compared with 17 percent of new House Members with failing or near-failing grades.
