George Allen Raised $1.1 Million in Second Quarter

Former Sen. George Allen announced raising $1.1 million from April to June, giving the Republican a second straight quarter of strong fundraising.
Allen’s likely general election opponent, former Gov. Tim Kaine, was twice as strong last quarter. The Democrat raised more than $2.2 million in his first three months in the race and has now surpassed Allen in cash on hand. By the end of June, Kaine had $1.8 million in the bank to Allen’s nearly $1.7 million.
Allen raised $1.5 million in the first quarter, before Kaine entered the fray, forcing Kaine to play catch-up for the last three months. The candidates are now basically even in money, and recent polling has confirmed this will likely remain one of the closest races in the country through next fall.
Republicans in the state note that Kaine has a national fundraising advantage after serving the last two years as chairman of the Democratic National Committee and raising more than $500,000 on the Democratic fundraising portal ActBlue.
Allen, a former chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, has received donations from more than 5,000 supporters through the first six months, and his campaign highlighted the fact that 82 percent of its second-quarter donors came from within Virginia. Kaine had more than 4,600 donors in the second quarter alone.
