Boehner Laughs at Pelosi’s Take on Tuesday’s Election

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) on Thursday dismissed Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) assertion that the two Congressional races won by Democrats in California and New York reflected the mood of the country on health care reform.
Pelosi told reporters Thursday morning: “As you know, Tuesday night we won two more votes for health care. I’m very proud of that because in both of those campaigns, health care was the issue.”
When asked about her comments on Thursday afternoon, Boehner laughed.
“Did she do it with a straight face?” Boehner joked during his weekly briefing with reporters.
Boehner said the 10th district seat in California won by state Lt. Gov. John Garamendi was “a hard-core Democrat district” where President Barack Obama won by 64 percent in 2008.
He noted that although the GOP lost the race for the seat in New York’s 23rd district, more Republicans voted in the district than Democrats.
Attorney Bill Owens defeated Conservative Party Doug Hoffman 49 percent to 46 percent. Republican candidate Dede Scozzafava, who dropped out of the race three days before Tuesday’s election, received 6 percent of the vote.
“The majority of the people who voted in the election in New York on Tuesday night voted against the Obama/Pelosi agenda here in Washington,” Boehner said. “Now they can spin it any way they want, but their Members saw what happened Tuesday night.”
Republicans have said that the GOP gubernatorial wins in New Jersey and Virginia are indicators that 2010 will be a tough election year for Democrats and characterized it as rebuke of the Obama administration’s agenda.
