Just days after the Dalai Lama’s visit to Capitol Hill, that other famous Buddhist is coming to town.

Actor Richard Gere is scheduled to appear tonight at a panel discussion on “The Convergence of Science and Spirituality” at the Mayflower Hotel. Sponsored by Emory University, the event will focus on an initiative being undertaken by the school to develop a comprehensive science curriculum for Tibetan monks.

Gere, chairman of the International Campaign for Tibet, will appear alongside author and psychologist Daniel Goleman, author and Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard, and initiative co-director Geshe Lobsang Negi. Lodi Gyari Rinpoche, a special envoy of the Dalai Lama, will give remarks.

A reception is set for 6:30 p.m., and the panel discussion is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m., according to a press release.

Senatorial Sportsmanship. Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) might have vandalized Sen. Ben Nelson’s office Thursday (as a friendly prank, of course), but the Nebraska Democrat ended up getting the last laugh.

McCaskill congratulated Nelson (via Twitter) on Thursday night after the University of Nebraska football team stunned the University of Missouri in a 27-12 come-from-behind victory in the fourth quarter. Only hours earlier, McCaskill and her staff were feeling pretty confident that their team would win, covering Nelson’s office with doctored photos of the Cornhusker State Senator wearing Mizzou hats, ties and football helmets.

And the Tigers’ loss wasn’t the only tough loss for Missouri sports fans such as McCaskill on Thursday night, either: The St. Louis Cardinals lost their Major League Baseball playoff matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the bottom of the ninth inning.

“Bad day for sports,” McCaskill tweeted. “Congrats to @SenBenNelson and the rest of Huskerland. Cardinals game? A heartbreaker.”
