Wilson Raises $2.7 Million After Outburst

Who knew two little words could be worth so much?
South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson (R) made about $1.35 million per word when he shouted “You lie!” at President Barack Obama during a joint session of Congress last month.
Wilson’s campaign said Thursday afternoon that the Congressman raised $2.7 million during the third quarter and the campaign had $2.6 million cash on hand as of Sept. 30.
To put that in perspective, Wilson’s fundraising total was more than most top-tier Senate candidates or vulnerable Senators bring in during any three month span.
“More than 50,000 Americans have extended their steadfast support to me in recent weeks,” Wilson said in a news release. “It has been a humbling honor to have this support from my constituents and the American people.”
Wilson’s opponent, whom liberal supporters championed in light of Wilson’s outburst, is also expected to report astounding fundraising numbers for the quarter. Within days of the Wilson outburst, veteran Rob Miller (D) had reported raising more than $1 million in campaign donations.
Miller’s campaign sent a solicitation to donors shortly after Wilson’s announcement asking them to step up financially again.
“I’m so grateful for your past generosity, and now I need your help again,” the campaign wrote in an e-mail. “Joe Wilson’s special interest friends have come through for him — let’s show him once again that he’s in for the fight of his life.”
