There are a lot of hazards that staffers face as they work on Capitol Hill.
BlackBerry-itis, for one. Then there are the dangers of over-texted thumbs.
But theres no need to throw that iPhone out the window there are ways to avoid these on-the-job injuries and still get through that pile of work each day.
The American Occupational Therapy Association will host a special workshop on Capitol Hill today designed to teach Members and staffers the safest ways to type and text, offering participants tips on topics such as proper keyboard use (dont use a wrist rest!) and the best ways to use a BlackBerry (avoid typing with your thumbs!).
Ive seen a lot of twisted thumbs among Members and staff that they could prevent if they use different strategies to use their BlackBerrys, said Chris Metzler, the chief public affairs officer for the association. They might not be feeling it now, but theyll be feeling it later in their lives.
Along with a special presentation designed to give Hillites a refresher on using PDAs safely, association officials will be on hand to offer one-on-one advice, Metzler told HOH. The group also will offer helpful handouts for staffers who cant stay for the entire presentation and give safety advice for a favorite Capitol Hill pastime golf.
The workshop is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. in room 1302 in the Longworth House Office Building.
Frank-ophiles. Rep. Barney Frank is scheduled to appear at the Sixth & I Historic Synagogue tonight to chat with author Stuart Weisberg about his new biography of the Massachusetts Democrat, Barney Frank: The Story of Americas Only Left-Handed, Gay, Jewish Congressman. Tickets cost $6 and can be purchased by calling 202-364-1919.
