Rep. James Langevin (D-R.I.) will be the chairman of the Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, the full committee announced Thursday.

Langevin replaces former Rep. Ellen Tauscher (D-Calif.), who resigned from Congress last month to take a top job at the State Department. Tauscher had served as subcommittee chairwoman since January 2007.

“Congressman Langevin has been a member of the House Armed Services Committee for many years, and also brings invaluable experience as a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. I am confident he will be an excellent chairman and make us proud as we work to protect Americans and preserve our national security," Armed Services Chairman Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) said in a statement.

Langevin will assume his post immediately.
