Murphy to Announce Tour Urging Dont Ask, Dont Tell Repeal
Roll Call Staff
Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-Pa.) is kicking off his role as the lead sponsor of Dont Ask, Dont Tell repeal legislation by helping to launch a national tour urging an end to the military policy that bans gays from openly serving.
Murphy, an Iraq War veteran, on Wednesday will team up with the Human Rights Campaign and Servicemembers United in announcing the tour at a National Press Club event. Speakers at the event will include the first wounded veteran in the Iraq War, a former U.S. Army Korean linguist who opted to not re-enlist because of Dont Ask, Dont Tell, and a U.S. Army veteran fluent in Arabic who was discharged for being gay.
Murphy took over as lead sponsor of the repeal legislation last Friday, when then-sponsor Rep. Ellen Tauscher (D-Calif.) resigned from the House to take a new job at the State Department.
