Capitol Hill to Host Emergency Drill
Roll Call Staff
Men in safety suits and respirators will emerge out of a manhole near Folger Park on Wednesday morning, but bypassing staffers have no need to worry its just a drill.
Starting at 9:30 a.m., Architect of the Capitol officials will be practicing evacuation procedures for the utility tunnels that run under the Capitol.
A safety team will complete the drill with Capitol Police and D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services near Folger Park at Second Street Southeast, AOC spokeswoman Eva Malecki said. It will last for about an hour and wont affect local traffic, she said.
The drill is part of the AOCs five-year effort to fix the aging utility tunnels, which suffer from falling concrete and exposed asbestos. More than two miles of tunnels are underneath the Capitol, heating and cooling Congressional buildings.
