Ex-Rep. Orton Killed in Accident

April 19, 2009, 9:23 a.m.

Former Rep. Bill Orton (D-Utah) died Saturday after the ATV that he was riding flipped over on a sand dune at Little Sahara Recreation Area, the Associated Press reported.

Juab County Sheriff Alden Orme told the AP that Orton died almost immediately of his injuries about 4 p.m. Saturday. He was 60.

Orton was first elected to the House in 1990 and served three terms. Orton lost the 3rd district seat in 1996 to Republican Chris Cannon. He ran an unsuccessful campaign for Utah governor in 2000.

Orton is survived by his wife, Jacquelyn and two sons, Will and Wes.

“This is a great loss to our state,” Rep. Jim Matheson (D-Utah) said in a statement. “Bill carried a strong commitment to serving the people of Utah with him to Washington D.C. He was a true Westerner with the independence that Utahns value in their elected officials. Even today, in the part of my district that was once part of his, people remember his efforts on their behalf.”
