Stevens to Hold Campaign Rally in Anchorage Wednesday Night

Just two days after being convicted in a federal corruption trial, Sen. Ted Stevens’ (R-Alaska) campaign is holding a “welcome home” rally for the longest-serving Republican Senator on Wednesday in Anchorage, Alaska.
Stevens was convicted of seven felony counts Monday for lying on his financial disclosure forms about gifts he received from an oil services company. Within hours of the jury announcing its verdict, Stevens proclaimed his innocence and vowed to fight for another term.
His first post-trial campaign stop will be a rally that the campaign expects will draw hundreds of people Wednesday night at the PenAir Hangar.
“Let’s welcome home a man that has done so much for our state — and encourage him to keep fighting!” reads a flier for the campaign.
Polls released before Stevens was convicted showed a dead-heat between the seven-term Republican Senator and Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich (D), whom Democrats consider one of their best recruits of the cycle.
The majority of Stevens’ Republican colleagues, including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.), have called for the Senator to resign. Stevens, however, has vowed to appeal the case and stay in the race with Begich.
