Stevens Wins Bid to Review Witness’s Medical Records

Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) will be allowed to review medical records of a key witness in the government’s case against him, a federal judge ruled Thursday.
Judge Emmet Sullivan approved a motion by Stevens’ legal team to obtain medical records for Bill Allen, former CEO of the oil services firm VECO.
The records — which relate to injuries Allen sustained in a motorcycle accident, including brain damage and a subsequent speech impairment — will be filed under seal and not be publicly available, Sullivan said.
Stevens faces seven counts of filing false statements to conceal the receipt of more than $250,000 in gifts from VECO and its executives over an eight-year period. He has pleaded not guilty, and his trial is scheduled to begin Monday.
Sullivan also approved Thursday the submission of evidence by government prosecutors including allegations that Stevens accepted and failed to report a $30,000 loan to purchase a Florida condominium.
