A staffer in Sen. Saxby Chambliss’ Atlanta office is being accused of writing a derogatory comment about gays and lesbians on a blog Tuesday, shortly after the Senate blocked legislation that included a repeal of the military’s ban on openly gay service members.
A statement released by Chambliss’ office Wednesday said it “appears to be the case” that the comment “All faggots must die,” which was written on the gay rights blog Joe.My.God., came from the Georgia Republican’s office.
“We have engaged the office of the Senate Sergeant at Arms in an internal review,” the statement said. “The SAA has worked side by side with our personnel to determine whether the comment in question emanated from our office. That appears to be the case. There has not been a determination as to who posted the comment. That part of the review is ongoing, and is now in the hands of the Senate Sergeant at Arms.”
After seeing the offensive comment left under the name Jimmy, blog owner Joe Jervis posted the Internet Protocol address used by the commenter and the directive, “Get busy, geeks!” Readers traced the address to the neighborhood of Chambliss’ Atlanta office.
Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) also has an office in the same area. A spokeswoman for the Isakson told the Journal-Constitution that his staff has determined the message did not originate with his office.
