Obama Heading Back to the Gulf

Barely two weeks after his previous visit to the region, President Barack Obama is heading to New Orleans on Sunday to talk about his administration’s efforts to help the region recover after the BP oil spill and in the years since Hurricane Katrina.

The president and first lady Michelle Obama will head to Louisiana from Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., where they are vacationing. They will continue on to Washington, D.C., later Sunday.

White House spokesman Bill Burton said Tuesday to expect the president to focus on actions taken by the administration to send help to the Gulf before the “terrible impact” of the oil spill.

“He’ll talk a little bit about our efforts, what we’ve done on Katrina, what we’re doing on the Gulf to a certain extent, and what we can do to help the Gulf region recover,” Burton told reporters Tuesday.

The Obama family spent a weekend vacationing along Florida’s Gulf Coast earlier this month. During that trip, the president declared the Gulf beaches “clean, safe and open for business.” He later swam in the waters of Panama City Beach.
