Former Louisiana Speaker Hunt Downer (R) said Tuesday that hes 99 percent certain hell run for Congress in the 3rd district seat that is being relinquished by Rep. Charlie Melancon (D) as he runs for Senate.
Downer said an announcement will come in the very near future and that hes currently working on wrapping up his service in the Louisiana National Guard where he is retiring as a major general this month.
Downer said hes also working on re-opening his old law office in Houma, La., but that hes looking forward to continuing my service to my state and my country.
Downers comments come a day after GOP state Rep. Nickie Monica said he was getting out of the GOP primary to make room for Downer.
Monica joined the race in late December after expressing interest in running for Congress even before Melancon announced he was running for Senate.
The Louisiana primaries are Aug. 28 and the runoff date is October 2.
Attorney Ravi Sangisetty (D) is the only Democrat running for the seat.
James Jones, communications director for DC Vote, tapes a "DC Constituents Service Day" sign on the wall as he stands with other DC residents outside of Rep. Andy Harris's office on Capitol Hill to protest Harris' actions against D.C.'s marijuana laws on Thursday, July 24, 2014. DC Vote encouraged DC residents to bring their complaints about city services to the Maryland congressman.
