HOH’s One-Minute Recess: To the Victors Go the Spoils

While Louisiana celebrated the New Orleans Saints’ spectacular win over the Indianapolis Colts at Sunday’s Super Bowl, the Pelican State’s two Senators couldn’t help but join the fun and brag a little about the team’s historic victory.

Just minutes after the final snap, Sen. Mary Landrieu (D) — whose brother, Mitch Landrieu, was recently elected mayor of New Orleans — put out a release congratulating the team on its first-ever Super Bowl win, calling the Saints “all that is good about New Orleans.”

“They are our heart and soul, and tonight they have lifted the spirits of a city and an entire region,” she said. “The Saints’ guts and determination have carried the Who Dat Nation to a place we only dreamed of four years ago. We could not be prouder of Sean Payton, Drew Brees, Reggie Bush and the rest of this Super Bowl Championship team. Who Dat?! Who Dat?! Who dat say dey gonna beat dem Saints?!”

Others expressed their love for the team via Twitter. Sen. David Vitter (R) — who wished the team luck via a video message before the game — celebrated on the social messaging Web site, posting: “Congrads Saints! Super Bowl Champions! Who Dat!”

House Members also got in on the fun. Rep. Charlie Melancon (D) — who, along with Vitter, had protested the National Football League’s legal action against vendors selling “Who Dat” merchandise — posted a congratulatory message for the team on his Senate campaign Web site.

HOH is sure the state’s other Representatives will soon follow with their own remarks — and some of them will even collect winnings. Several, including GOP Reps. Steve Scalise and Anh “Joseph” Cao, had established friendly wagers with Members from Indiana prior to the game, after all.
