HOH’s One-Minute Recess: Tween Heartthrob Alert

Don’t be alarmed if you see a gaggle of excited teenage girls outside Sen. Frank Lautenberg’s (D-N.J.) office Tuesday afternoon.

Nick Jonas, one-third of the wholesome teenage pop band the Jonas Brothers, is scheduled to be on Capitol Hill over the next two days to lobby Congressmen, including visiting Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) office, and testify before a Senate panel on the need to provide federal funding for diabetes research.

First diagnosed with the disease at 13, Jonas has been publicly open about his personal struggle with diabetes, and he has partnered with Bayer Healthcare to increase awareness and share his own experiences coping with the condition. (He even blogs!)

The 16-year-old musician (who’s rumored to be back with former flame Miley Cyrus) is scheduled to meet with Lautenberg on Tuesday to chat about juvenile diabetes. The New Jersey Democrat likely will lend a friendly ear: He’s pushed to increase funding for research into the disease and recently introduced legislation designed to prevent diabetes in minority communities.

On Wednesday morning, Jonas will testify at a hearing before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee to ask Congress to provide more federal funding for diabetes research.

And Jonas won’t be the only celeb on hand, either. Actress Mary Tyler Moore, who serves as international chairwoman of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, also will testify, alongside retired boxing great Sugar Ray Leonard, who is a past chairman of the organization.
