Ways and Means Democrats Meet With Obama

President Barack Obama on Tuesday held what the White House described as a “productive” meeting with Ways and Means Democrats on health care overhaul legislation, telling Members that he will soon lay out new savings in Medicare and Medicaid, according to a White House readout of the session.

During the White House session, Obama reiterated his support for his own revenue-raising proposal, a plan to reduce deductions for higher income earners that has so far been rejected by Congress.

Ways and Means Chairman Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) said he was satisfied with the meeting.

“We could not ask for a better leader than President Obama to put America back on track for economic recovery and work to fix our broken health care system,” Rangel said in a statement. “Today’s meeting underscored that we share the same principles and commitment to health reform and we look forward to President Obama’s continued leadership to make this critical effort a reality.”
