With the special election in New Yorks 20th Congressional district deadlocked, the National Republican Congressional Committee sent out an early-morning financial appeal Wednesday, urging supporters to contribute so the Democrats dont steal the election. In an e-mail with the subject line, Dont Let Em Pull a Franken, NRCC Executive Director Guy Harrison urged Republicans to pony up to the committee to ensure we can overcome the Democrats legal maneuvers.Democrat Scott Murphy leads Republican James Tedisco by just 59 votes out of more than 154,000 cast Tuesday. More than 5,900 absentee ballots will begin to be counted Monday, and overseas ballots from military personnel can still be counted if elections officials receive them by April 13, meaning the race to replace now-Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D) wont be resolved until mid-April at the earliest. In late-night speeches Tuesday, both Tedisco, the state Assembly Minority Leader, and Murphy, a wealthy businessman, thanked supporters and expressed confidence that they would prevail. But neither publicly discussed the process that lies ahead. That didnt prevent Harrison from predicting a nasty legal fight in his e-mail and calling for reinforcements.Democrats have almost succeeded in stealing the election in Minnesota and seating Al Franken, he wrote. We cannot allow them to manipulate electoral results to seat another tax-troubled liberal. We need your support to make sure the will of the residents of New Yorks 20th district prevails in the final outcome. Please contribute today and together we can ensure a fair and accurate count of the remaining ballots.
Following the speeches from elected officials, the crowd stands at long tables as they dig into BBQ, brunswick stew, cadillac rice at the Law Enforcement Cookout at Wayne Dasher's pond house in Glennville, Ga., on Thursday, April 17, 2014.
