House GOP Looks to Triangulate

The confetti from the inaugural parties barely will be swept up when House Republicans meet on Wednesday to begin drawing stark contrasts between President Barack Obama and the House Democratic leadership.

House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) along with Ways and Means ranking member Dave Camp (R-Mich.) and Rep. Peter Roskam (R-Ill.) will hold a press conference at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday to highlight how they believe the promises for bipartisanship by the Obama administration are directly undermined by the legislative moves of Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

“Congressional Democrats are already moving in the opposite direction of President Obama,” said Brad Dayspring, a spokesman for Cantor. “So far, they have refused to work with Republicans to offer real economic solutions geared toward middle class families, taxpayers and small businesses.”

He added that Democrats have ignored Obama’s call for “total transparency and bipartisan cooperation.”

Dayspring said Republican leaders’ economic-recovery working group are requesting to meet with Obama on Thursday at the White House to present their ideas for economic recovery.

“Republicans continue to make clear that real solutions to the economic challenges facing our nation are vital and we stand ready to work with President Obama to do what is best for American families — despite the roadblocks and partisan warning flares of congressional Democrats,” he said.

The clear expectation is Congress will get very little done this election year. But what does get accomplished, at least in the high-profile areas, will largely be the handiwork of an elite group of staffers — who combine policy expertise, political acumen and the trust of their lawmaker bosses to drive much of the legislative agenda.
