Carter, Kerry, Daschle Added as Convention Speakers

Former President Jimmy Carter, the Democrats’ 2004 presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry (Mass.) and one-time Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) all have been added to the lineup of big-name speakers at the Democratic National Convention in Denver next week.

Convention organizers added the names on Tuesday along with dozens more for the nominating event that kicks off Monday and wraps up Thursday night when Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) is expected to accept the party’s nomination for the presidency. Joining Carter, Kerry and Daschle will also be numerous Senators, high-profile labor leaders and governors.

The convention will open at 3 p.m. MST each day, and the events will conclude by 9 p.m. MST.

On Monday, Carter is among some of the new additions to the stage that include Sen. Amy Klobuchar (Minn.), Miami Mayor Manny Diaz, National Education Association President Reg Weaver, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten and NARAL Pro-Choice America President Nancy Keenan.

Tuesday will feature Sen. Patrick Leahy (Vt.); West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin, chairman of the Democratic Governors Association; AFL-CIO President John Sweeney; and Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Cecile Richards.

Wednesday brings Kerry and Daschle to the lineup during the evening set to feature the yet unnamed vice-presidential pick. That evening will also feature Sen. Jack Reed (R.I.) and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley.
