Sessions Threatens to Block Recess

Senate Budget ranking member Jeff Sessions said Monday that he will object to any attempt to adjourn for the Memorial Day recess unless Democrats bring forward their own budget plan.

“I’m going to require that we have a vote on it,” the Alabama Republican said. He added sarcastically, “Let’s vote to go home having not done the people’s business.”

Sessions ripped Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) for his statement last week in a Los Angeles Times interview that it would be “foolish” for Democrats to do their own budget at this point.

Sessions said Reid was playing partisan games by holding a vote on the House blueprint written by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and aiming to defeat it without offering a Democratic alternative.

“The Majority Leader is wasting the American people’s time,” Sessions said.

Senate Democrats announced last week that they would wait to do a budget until after bipartisan negotiations are concluded.
